FAQs
Organic farming is a style of agriculture that does not use chemicals in the form of herbicides or pesticides to force maximum crop yields. These chemicals have been shown to be extremely harmful to the human body, as well as harmful to the environment that naturally supports the growth of crops. We farm organically, which is more of a challenge, because we believe that it is worth supporting the health of our customers, and we believe that it will keep the land that we farm healthy for generations to come.
When we say we use regenerative agriculture practices, we mean that we use practices that support the growth of microbes in the soil which are necessary to support plant life. When our land was first turned into farmland, it had been a grass prairie for millennia, and the microbes were numerous and healthy. After years of harsh conventional farming practices, microbes are destroyed. We use crop rotations, cover crops, and natural fertilizers (animal poop) to build back the microbe microbiome to what it would naturally be in rich prairie soil.
Not only do the microbes in the soil (mentioned in the above FAQ) support the growth of the crops themselves, they also support the nutrients that are within the food products that come from those crops. Thus, not only are you avoiding the harmful effects of herbicides and pesticides by buying organic products from us, you are also enjoying additional nutritional value above and beyond conventionally grown food products.
A big part of regenerative farming practices is a proper crop rotation. Currently, we grow winter wheat, alfalfa, feed corn, and black beans in addition to our popcorn. We also have a herd of lowline angus beef cattle. The cattle provide fertilizer for the fields, and each different crop adds and removes different nutrients to the soil. We have carefully developed our crop rotation plan to create the healthiest environment possible for our crops to grow in. We are hoping to offer several of these products directly to you through this website soon, so check back often to see if they become available!
Popcorn, being a dried, whole grain will never spoil or rot. We carefully test our popcorn to ensure it has the correct moisture content before we package it. Too much moisture could cause molding; too little will cause it to be unable to pop. Because we ensure that it has the correct moisture content when it goes into the packaging, it will last indefinitely. We recommend keeping the bag sealed in between uses so that the popcorn does not dry out and be unable to pop.
Our packaging is resealable to keep your popcorn at the proper moisture level, so we recommend leaving it in the packaging it is delivered in. If you wish to store it in some other receptacle, we simply recommend using it up quickly so that it does not dry out, or keeping it refrigerated.
